What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the median nerve passing through the wrist. The median nerve carries the sense of touch to the hand and fingers, and compression of it may cause pain and other symptoms.

It is commonly found in people who perform repetitive hand movements (typing, manual labour) or who have unusual wrist and hand posture habits. It can also be found in pregnant women who are experiencing hormonal changes and fluid retention. More on this point later.

What are Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may include the following:

  • Pain in the wrist or hand
  • Tingling in the hand
  • Burning in the hand
  • Numbness in the hand
  • Swelling of the wrist and hand
  • Impaired sensory and/or motor function.

How can a Chiropractor Help with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

At Our Family Chiropractor, we may be able to help you with your carpal tunnel syndrome.

Physical examination, posture assessments and understanding how you move your wrist may help us to provide a diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractic care is non-invasive and may help with correcting improper alignment in your body in the case that it is causing musculoskeletal concerns

Until you are ready to address the root cause of your carpal tunnel syndrome, there are some things you can do to relieve the pain associated with it.

These include:

  • Avoiding repetitive movements of the wrist and hand
  • Avoiding extreme flexion and extension of the hand while working or sleeping
  • Using a carpal tunnel syndrome splint at night to avoid bending of the wrist when sleeping
  • Performing carpal tunnel syndrome stretching under the direction of a health practitioner.

If the cause of your carpal tunnel syndrome is out of our scope, you will be referred to a doctor or a specialist for diagnosis and treatment.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment for Pregnant Women

At Our Family Chiropractor, we are a family-based healthcare clinic experienced in helping pregnant women with their musculoskeletal health concerns. This includes concerns like lower back pain, hip pain and issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome. We provide gentle chiropractic adjustments to address your carpal tunnel while being mindful of your body’s sensitive state.

Pregnant women may be at a greater risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome due to experiencing hormonal changes and fluid retention. This may cause swelling around the wrist as well. It is important to diagnose and treat carpal tunnel syndrome so that you can have a more comfortable pregnancy experience.

In addition to addressing carpal tunnel syndrome, we also help pregnant women with back pain and other musculoskeletal health concerns. Find out more about our pregnancy chiropractic care here.
