Chiropractor for pregnancy back pain
Back pain is very common when pregnant. It can be caused by the weight of the baby, hormonal changes, changing biomechanics, nerve interference (sciatica), pressure on your spine, and more.
Musculoskeletal health concerns, such as back pain, affect an estimated 50 percent to 80 percent of pregnant women.
As chiropractors are primary contact healthcare providers, you DO NOT need a referral from your GP to see a chiropractor. Simply contact us to arrange a consultation so that we can address your back pain.
What causes lower back pain in pregnancy?
For many women, one of the biggest complaints during pregnancy is that aching back! As a new mum myself, trust me when I tell you I know what this feels like.
For some women, back pain may actually be the first sign that you are pregnant.
Some of the common causes of early (first trimester) pregnancy back pain include:
- Hormone increases – when pregnant, your body releases hormones that aid in joint and ligament relaxation or loosening, which is important later on when delivering the baby. This can also affect your back.
- Stress – stress increases muscle pain and tightness and this can be amplified in areas of your body that are weaker or more injury prone. Adding a layer of stress, anxiety and/or worry can contribute to back pain.
Some of the common causes of later stage (second or third trimester) pregnancy back pain include:
- Changing biomechanics – your centre of gravity creeps forward as your belly grows. This can change how you sit, stand, sleep and move overall.
- Weight gain – extra weight from baby can strain your back and pelvic muscles, leading to pain.
Pregnancy back pain – what can you do?
Despite all this pain, there are many different things you can do to address back pain.

When it comes to chiropractic, yes it is generally safe and effective when performed the right way, to address an appropriate issue, and by the right practitioner.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a hands-on technique that applies a controlled force to certain problematic areas along the spine and joints. The goal of this treatment is to restore nerve function, reduce muscle spasms, improve alignment, and provide relief from pain.
We provide a natural, drug free healthcare solution for those wanting to feel and move better, and move towards improved health.
How late in pregnancy can you go to the chiropractor?
We often see clients pre pregnancy so that we can support you to best set up your body to deal with the quickly changing biomechanics and weight gain of pregnancy. Although, we do see women for first visits all the way up to 42 weeks.
