Clinical Best Practice
Rest assured, our clinical practice is consistent with current evidence and/or best-practice approaches. This includes consideration of the following points, when it comes to chiropractic and kids:
- Inform you about the quality of the acceptable evidence for treating children, and explain the clinical basis for the proposed treatment
- Children have significant anatomical, physiological, developmental and psychological differences when compared to the needs of adults. As such, when consulting with children we use specific skills and expertise when performing informed consent, examination, diagnosis, referral of ‘red flags’ and assessing contraindications to care.
- Provide patients (or parent and/or guardian) with information about the risks and benefits associated with chiropractic care, alternative treatment options (and their risks and benefits) and the risks of receiving no treatment
- Any recommendation for treatment will be discussed with parents and/or guardians.
We endeavour to communicate effectively with other health practitioners involved in the care of your child. This may include the child’s general practitioner or paediatrician, or other healthcare practitioners.
Should your child’s case not warrant chiropractic treatment, we may refer out to other registered health practitioners as required.
Chiropractic and Kids: Treatment
Chiropractic care is a ‘hands on’ approach to tackle a range of musculoskeletal complaints. When it comes to performing a chiropractic adjustment on a child, the technique differs somewhat to chiropractic care for adults.
While young bodies have the same joints as adults, they are still developing and growing. The joints in a child’s body are more cartilaginous compared to adult joints. Younger joints may also be more flexible. They are certainly smaller in size.
These anatomical differences mean that chiropractic treatment must be performed in a different way, using a modified technique. Think of a gentler, softer approach.
This modified version of treatment may include consideration of:
- A modified technique and adjusted use of force, depending on the age
- The symptoms present, the facts around the case and the development of the patient
In all cases, the best interests of our patients remain top priority.
Interesting Facts About Younger Bodies
Here are some facts about younger bodies, and how their anatomy differs to that of a fully grown adult. These facts are relevant to most types of paediatric care.
Smaller Bones and Joints
Children differ from adults anatomically and physiologically – the bones of a child are smaller and their joints are more shallow, causing their bones to be less locked together1.
Early Development Posture
Good posture is important in early development – straightening the back when sitting and standing may help your child’s back muscles become stronger over time, reduce back aches and fatigue, and align joints and bones along the spine2.
Growing Pains?
Children may not know what hurts or bothers them – it is often up to a child’s parents or guardians to determine treatment options as young children are unable to explain their pain accurately3.
Monitor your Child’s Growth
It is beneficial to monitor your child’s growth – similar to taking your child to regular health checkups, monitoring your child’s growth yourself can help with detecting any nutritional or other health problems early. You can monitor your child’s growth by keeping a record of their height, weight and posture4.
The Head and Neck
Anatomy of the head and neck – according to the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, young children with underdeveloped musculature are more likely to sustain isolated head and neck injuries (as well as upper spine injuries) than older children5.
Growth Rates
A child’s body parts vary in growth according to age – for example, the mid-point of an infant’s body is above the navel at birth, below the navel at 2 years of age and closer to the pubic bones after 16 years6.
